Sitting is the new smoking

The simplest guideline for all of us would have to be, “Sit less and move more, ”  according to close to 2,000-member Philippine Heart Association (PHA) and  the  husband and wife tandem of  fitness gurus,  Jim and Toni Saret.

Yes, there’s a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause. As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death.

Sitting  for around eight hours a day at the workplace increases the risk of contracting heart disease, cancer and diabetes by 40 percent. Actually, it can cause killer legs, too.

Majority of the world population is in the working age-group. This group are always on the computer.  Glued on their seats for eight hours, they lead sedentary lifestyles, while facing different kinds of stress which leads to unhealthy eating (stress eating) and lifestyle. Most of them are unable to engage in appropriate physical activities for their physical and mental well-being. And in worse cases, some do not have the means to cope with stress and maintain mental health.

Eating healthy, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding vices like alcohol and cigarettes are ways of preventing major lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancers as well as other risk factors such as raise blood pressure, raise blood sugar level and  obesity. However, awareness and practices of these healthy benefits are still low among the working population

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA), a non-stock, non-profit organization of 1,780 Filipino cardiologists is committed to foster exceptional cardiovascular education and primary care for everyone. Living up to its mission, the PHA aims to do its share on the awareness on preventive and management of heart diseases. The initiative encourages employees to improve their physical and mental well-being, and effectively address sedentary lifestyles by launching a campaign called “Sneakers Friday.”

“Sneakers Friday” capitalizes on promoting physical activity. It is meant to promote workplace health and wellness where personnel are encouraged to wear sneakers, casual top and pants every Friday as a “dress down day.”

The PHA’s “Sneakers Friday” campaign builds on the perspective that individuals have the ability to adopt healthy lifestyles when supported by a conducive workplace environment that promotes “healthy eating, healthy habits and physical and mental fitness.”

In order to obtain a healthy lifestyle, it is important to incorporate wellness in all aspects of one’s life, including the workplace. Corporate wellness generates many positive outcomes for their employees as well as the company itself. Even a simple activity such as walking (or brisk walking, with100 steps per minute) has so many powerful health benefits. When done correctly and regularly, it can be the key to losing weight, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and boosting your memory as well as reducing your risk for developing heart disease, diabetes, cancer and more. Walking could be done effortlessly without interrupting corporate work. One can also choose to take the stairs rather than ride the elevator or when one parks the car, choose the farthest end so you’d have more time to walk.

The “Sneakers Friday” initial campaign got off the ground spearheaded by medical professionals and cardiovascular experts themselves in November of 2017 with the Makati Medical Center as its launching site, followed by The Medical City where every last weekday was officially declared as “Sneakers Friday.”

Last May 22, 2018, The “Sneakers Friday” campaign was officially launched. This ultimate goal of this campaign is to encourage the corporate sector to integrate more physical activity into their hectic pace and to make them aware that the corporate sector is the paragon of good health.

The benefits of incorporating a wellness program like “Sneakers Friday” in your workplace:
Aside from promoting a healthy lifestyle, it relieves employee stress, and it also promotes employee camaraderie. Setting time aside for employees to exercise can help reduce stress and overall sitting time. It also releases endorphins (happy hormones) and in the process creating happier and more energized employees. With a better mood and more energy comes more productivity!

Incorporating the Sneakers Friday campaign is great for promoting employee fitness and health. Partaking in physical fitness activities is proven to lower one’s chances of getting sick, which in return will ultimately lower health care costs for employees and the company. In addition, there’s an increase productivity as employees take fewer sick days too.

Employees get to know fellow employees outside of work. With a great group activity that allows co-workers to get to know each other better, employees will get the benefits of physical activity and the socialization that comes along with the group exercise.

With the “Sneakers Friday” campaign, coupled with healthy habits and lifestyle, the PHA looks forward to seeing happier and heart healthier Filipinos.

One-On-One Mentoring

Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship and Go Negosyo founder Joey Concepcion led the launch of the Mentor Me On Wheels last May 11, 2018 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall. He mentored JB Estrada who is a start-up entrepreneur who specializes in pastries and breads.

I cannot stress enough that mentorship is key in helping our micro and small entrepreneurs. In fact, when I was starting as an entrepreneur, I was mentored well by my father, that is why I strongly believe that bringing our mentors close to the people will help our budding business owners to embrace the entrepreneurial culture.

Last May 11, Go Negosyo launched the first leg of the Mentor Me on Wheels (MMOW) at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall together with Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, mentors Johnlu Koa, and Josiah Go, and other dedicated mentors from different areas of entrepreneurship expertise. It was a free one-on-one mentorship session from a pool of successful entrepreneur-mentors. This first and biggest mentoring session is just one of many MMOW launches we plan to hold in partnership with the different malls nationwide.

We shared our knowledge on entrepreneurial mind-setting and marketing to aspiring and start-up business owners from all over the country. JB Estrada was one of the mentees to whom I personally shared my experiences and business tips on becoming an entrepreneur. I learned that JB’s mom really loves serving breakfast every morning for her family. She usually posts them online, so friends took notice of the bread she bakes. Because of the response, they decided to start the business at home.

He talked about how they struggled with running the business, especially his mom as she cooks everything from scratch. He also asked for help in developing the branding of his business and attracting potential customers. He also mentioned about their closed trucking business previously operated by his father. I asked my assistant to link him with our company, RFM Corp., to explore breads and pastries development and the possibility of a business venture for their trucking.

I also asked him to meet with Johnlu Koa, who is behind the successful French Baker, to gain more knowledge about the baking industry. I am certain that he learned a lot from Johnlu as they both share the same passion for baking.

Lorenzo Llera, one of the attendees, was in luck as he was also able to gain new concepts from our experienced mentors. He also started a baking business to have an alternative source of income and be self-sufficient. He owns and bakes his own Filipino food products like monay, loaf bread, pandesal and ensaymada. Johnlu also gave him advice on how to market his own brand and make a name for it so more people would know about his business.

Sec. Lopez mentored Claverene Ramos on how to run her computer and gadgets shop. I am certain she gained new ideas because she is now conceptualizing her business plan. I hope Sec. Lopez’s advice on being passionate in everything you do will eventually bear fruit as her business flourishes.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez also joined the launch of the first and biggest one-on-one mentoring session. Claverene Ramos who travelled all the way from Lobo, Batangas was lucky to receive mentorship from Sec. Lopez.

Ma. Anjellica San Miguel sought advice from Josiah Go on how to sustain her cafe. She learned how to be more disciplined in handling her employees and, at the same time, gained some helpful ideas on how to market her business.

Butz Bartolome, one of our pioneer mentors for the past 13 years, dedicated his time to mentor during this launch. He shared that gone are the days that we do not get to actually interact with our stakeholders. Seeing their smiling faces after our one-on-one mentorship sessions is really an indicator that we are really filling the gap between us and these budding entrepreneurs. Through MMOW, according to him, we walk the journey with them.

I salute Toto Barcelona, one of our mentors in our Kapatid Agri Mentor ME Program, as he personally attended to the needs of our mentees in the agriculture sector. He said this opportunity was a great avenue in concretizing their business plans. One-on-one sessions help in making the approach more personal to our mentees.

Delby Bragais said that there is really more to mentoring than making money. She said that the business landscape is changing fast and we need to embrace the technologies available to help micro and small enterprises scale up. I hope that the launch of our mobile application will further expand our reach to those who cannot go to the malls and other venues for Go Negosyo’s programs like Kapatid Mentor Me and Kapatid Agri Mentor Me.

I agree with what Sec. Mon said that MMOW is really a testament to a stronger public-private partnership. I want to thank our mentors for sharing their time, effort and expertise on how to become successful entrepreneurs. Participating in one-on-one mentoring sessions is not only rewarding, but also a memorable experience for me and all the dedicated and patient mentors.

I wish success to everyone who attended the event. May you take the lessons with you as you plan your own enterprises. I hope the next MMOW launch will be welcomed by many aspiring entrepreneurs so we can help them scale up their lives.

Around 500 pre-registered aspiring and start-up entrepreneurs signed up as mentee
s during the launch of the Mentor Me On Wheels.

XLOG Press Launch

Manila, Philippines - For people that have experience with shipping and logistics, they would know that the process can be challenging, to say the least. From trying to find the right supplier that delivers good service at a fair price, to the constant fear of having goods stolen while in transit, it can really be a pain.

With this in mind, Shiptek Solutions Corp., a homegrown technology company, had just announced their solution that looks to revolutionize the shipping and logistics forever.

Meet XLOG - the first ever end-to end logistical solutions provider.

XLOG aims to become a catalyst of business success by making logistics work for you, not against you. It is designed to take away all the challenges of logistics, giving businesses one less thing to worry about.

"Being in the Shipping and Logistics industry for 24 years now, I've seen all the problems encountered by both shippers and service providers, which served as our inspiration, " says XLOG founder and CEO, Jun Ynion.
"We created XLOG with the goal of bringing Shipping and Logistics into the digital age by creating an online marketplace for both companies that offer and for companies that require such services. By consolidating all these services on one single platform, it will allow for a simplified process, better tracking and security, and ease of transaction documentation. This is the next step for the shipping and logistics industry,"

Based on current practices, an average rate request would take at least 1 day to get a standard quotation, and an additional 1.5 days for renegotiated rates. Beforehand, a customer would have to email/contact multiple providers to ask whether they serve such lane or not. These are not the only deciding factor when it comes to choosing the best service partner. One would have to consider transit times, gate-in deadlines, and other charges which one might have to renegotiate for. This again would take 1 more day the most. With XLOG, the entire process is cut down to just 1.5 days by providing an instant quotation to customers from multiple service partners that offers their specific needs. XLOG helps you make the right decision by providing and instant rate quotation depending on your specific needs. We reduce the back-and-forth process by laying down all the information needed for a customer to make a decision and we allow customers to input renegotiation requests. All of this is done in just one click of the submit button and once the service partner receives these information, all he can do is accept/reject.
FINDING THE RIGHT PARTNER
XLog provides shippers a wide range of services and vendors to choose from. This allows for securing the best possible rates with reputable service providers.

SECURING GOODS
XLog guarantees safety and security for goods in transit with its extensive GPS tracking feature. Not only will it let shippers know when goods have gone from point A and arrived at point B, but XLog has the capability to show the exact location of the goods in real time.

EFFICIENT AND QUICK TRANSACTIONS
XLog makes transactions hassle-free and faster than ever by allowing all negostiations and deals to be done online, no actual papers required! Also, every transaction reference is automatically stored in the XLOG system, easy to come back to in the future.
Through XLOG, businesses, booth shippers and service providers, will now be able to move faster and safer than ever. This is the future of shipping and logistics.

This is XLOG.
